Late Edition

It only happens once in a generation.  A team comes along, a team no one expects, with a magnificent destiny that just won’t be denied.  You have to be vigilant to spot those rare special teams coming, and I’m here to tell you that the St. Louis Cardinals are one of those teams.

You can see it when they take the field, that moxie they play with. Anyone who watched last night’s game knows what I mean.  The Cardinals knew better than anyone that they were going back to the World Series.  Time and time again these last couple years we’ve seen them up against the wall, hanging by a thread, at the bottom of the barrel, yet each time they dig deep, go back to that well that just won’t run dry, and come up with a big win.  It never fails; they stand firm just when everybody counts them out.  Continue reading

The Knickerbocker Time Machine

The time is nigh.  The second coming, the resurrection, the Immaculate Conception, it’s here; and it’s got nothing to do with the Mayans. Continue reading

The Deficit Crisis and the NBA

Thanks to Barack Obama, the United States is in debt trillions of dollars. I’ve heard a lot of talk about potential solutions, like cutting military spending and eliminating PBS, but shockingly no one has mentioned this:

It’s time to sell the National Basketball Association.

To the Chinese. Continue reading

An Inconceivable Truth: The Plot to Kill Football

The plan to replace football…with futbol.

We’re in the midst of a diabolical plot to destroy America’s greatest game. It’s a vast conspiracy that works its way up to the very top, and if sports fans like you and me don’t act soon, we run the risk of being overtaken by a pack of un-American, human-interested pansies. Continue reading

Cliff Lee is Indecisive

Cliff Lee is not a winner. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Zero wins in his first 13 starts. Winless in four out of five months. Thirteen consecutive starts at Citizens Bank Park without recording a victory. Countless blown opportunities and late inning lapses. I don’t give a shit about WHIP, WARP, WHAP, WHOOPIE or any of that Saber-jargon. For a guy making $125 million, his performance has been downright inexcusable.

It’s too easy, however, to label Lee a loser. Losers don’t show glimpses of greatness for significant stretches. Sure, he blew it for the Phillies in the playoffs last season when he coughed up a four-run lead against the St. Louis Cardinals and he cost the Texas Ranger the World Series the year before, but this is the same guy that carried the Phillies to a World Series in 2010.

Cliff Lee hasn’t won many games this season, but he hasn’t lost many either. He’s been indecisive.

Even during this painful season, the loser label doesn’t line up. In fact, if you take a closer look at his numbers, he’s as much of a loser as Justin Verlander, Jordan Zimmerman, Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw.1              Continue reading

It’s Tim Tebow’s turn to toss turnovers

Move over Mark, it’s Tim Tebow’s turn to toss turnovers.

The way ESPN and their ilk have been covering Jets training camp this year, you’d think there was some question as to who the starting quarterback should be.  Obviously, that’s preposterous.  The facts just don’t lie. Tim Tebow is the guy.

Tebow is a once-in-a-generation, maybe even a once-in-a-sport, kind of player.  There’s never been anyone like him, and there might never be again.
Completion percentages, interception numbers, QB rating, the ability to throw the football, these things mean next to nothing when it comes to a guy like Tim.  He’s a born winner.  Continue reading

It shouldn’t take more than two to tango

I thought we were finished with all of this madness. I’m talking about the four-team deal that sent Dwight Howard to Los Angeles, Andre Iguodala to Denver, Andrew Bynum to Philadelphia, and a bunch of rags to the Orlando Magic. Didn’t David Stern and the National Basketball Players Association just reach a new collective bargaining agreement to prevent precisely this type of deal? Continue reading
