The media continued its assault on the New Orleans Saints, and this time the victim is general manager Mickey Loomis. The 2006 Executive of the Year has been accused of using an illegal eavesdropping device from 2002-2004.

First, Roger Goodell throws him under the bus for his (non)-role in Bountygate, and now he is being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. It is truly sad for something like this to happen to Loomis, who has been loyal to New Orleans for 12 seasons and the NFL for 25. We also can’t forget what he did for New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

It was, however, refreshing to hear interim Saints coach Joe Vitt stick up for his superior.

“Anybody that ever wants to question Mickey’s integrity on something like this. I mean, this is juvenile,” Vitt told ESPN. “This is so bad, what’s been reported, and it’s irresponsible. It really is. … I just know it’s not true. I know what Mickey’s meant in my life and I know what he’s meant in the lives of a lot of people around this league and you can’t get anybody to find fault with Mickey Loomis. That’s just the truth.”

Vitt really hits the nail on the coffin. It is implausible that Vitt, who has worked with Loomis for 17 years, could have possibly missed this. This is your classic, “kick a guy when he is down” situation, based off an anonymous report from someone with an alterior motive.

Even if we tossed aside the good old “Presumption of innocence,” which separates us from countries like Mexico, former NFL Executive Bill Polian makes a brilliant point.

“There’s something missing here,’’ said Polian, who now works for ESPN. “I don’t know what kind of competitive advantage you can get. Mickey would have to know the verbiage of every other opposing team in order to translate it, and then he would have to do it instantly and find some way to communicate with his coaching staff and get it down to the field in time for it to be useful. That would be very difficult to do in my opinion.”

If we have learned anything from the recent sports scandals, it’s that we can’t keep searching for the minor mishaps in what are otherwise magnificent careers. In the end, we will only find the flaws proving that our heroes are human. The media already killed Joe Paterno, who never committed a crime. The sports world can’t afford to lose another legacy.

Last week, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that Pat Burrell will sign a one-day minor league contract in May so he can retire as a Phillie. But with current starting left fielder John Mayberry Jr. batting .175 and on pace for 20 RBIs, I don’t see why the Phillies organization hasn’t spoken to Burrell about rejoining the team long-term. In Burrell, you get a guy that knows how to handle the pressures of playing in Philadelphia. His double in game five of the 2008 World Series might go down as the most important play in Phillies history. He is a clutch, proven hitter who can replace Chase Utley’s leadership in the clubhouse.

Sure, Mayberry is a talented, athletic specimen (Why doesn’t he steal more bases?) but he doesn’t have the plate discipline to handle the job as a full-time starter. He has gone hitless over the last seven games, and you can tell that his confidence is starting to falter. This is not someone like Freddy Galvis, who can be thrown right into the fire. Not to mention, Mayberry shares many of the same attributes as top prospect Domonic Brown. If and when Brown gets called up, he would fit better alongside a Burrell, or even a Lance Nix.

Obviously, injuries are partially to blame for the offensive woes. Utley not only produces on the field, but brings a sense of confidence that is downright contagious. And when Ryan Howard steps up to the plate, you know he is going to drive in those runs. The Phillies, however, must play with the hand they have been dealt. A wild card like Mayberry isn’t going to help the MLB’s 29th ranked offense. Given the additional available playoff spot this season, the Phillies would be better off playing it safe by turning in their two of spades for a Jack-of-all-trades. They cannot afford to stand pat.

The culture of sports media is getting out of hand. Bloggers and sports journalists are twisting stories and skewing the facts, and it needs to stop. With our increasing dependence on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, it’s hard to separate fiction from reality. Complicated stories are summed up in 140 words or less. Word gets around and spreads like wildfire, even when it is from a blog led by a bunch of college kids in a dorm room.

Gone are the days when you could open your newspaper knowing the professional writers did a thorough job checking their sources, and checking their sources’ sources. Tabloid blogs like Deadspin.com are taking over. Wannabe journalists like Bill Simmons are suddenly the authority, and not just on sports. People like Bill James and John Hollinger are becoming the so-called experts with their equations and misleading statistics, (The Knicks are better than the Celtics? Really?) yet they have never been inside a locker room or even played the sport. And don’t get me started with the folks at the four letter network.

It’s time to combat the irresponsible sports media by fighting fire with fire. This website will focus on Philadelphia sports but expand to coverage of national stories. So go ahead and keep on reading and listening to sports media members assault the traditions that make American sports so special. But if you want some trustworthy news with well-thought-out analysis and commentary, stay tuned for more articles on CheesesteakSports.com.
